Default What makes an Alpina special?

Almost no one you will meet in Canada or the United States outside of the enthusiast community will know of Alpina. Even many BMW fans won't really be aware of Alpina except as another 'tuner' like Dinan or AC Schnitzer.

So what do you say when you try to explain what makes an Alpina an Alpina? What makes an Alpina special, different, better than a run-of-the mill BMW?

Very good topic,
Alpina brand was created mainly based on passion for race and enhancement of a good brand car manufacturer such as BMW to something better and special that we know it as Alpina car manufacturer today. Since 1963 all the effort that was put in by few individuals is a testament to this brand which we now know as an Alpina car manufacturing.
At first Alpina tried Fiat brand but the brand was not reliable and wasn’t engineered well enough to be modified, so Alpina changed their base brand to BMW and they started with 1600 cc models. Mission was to make the 1600cc to out perform and go faster then 1800cc engine that was available by BMW and they did and success was unstoppable and they keep modifying cars and creating such an icons such as Alpina 2002s, Alpina 3.0 CSLs, Alpina e12 and e28 B7Turbos, e30 B6S and many other models which dominated all the European Turing championship through out 60s, 70s and 80s, and their wining formula won BMW’s corporation hart and mind that proudly recognized Alpina as a partner and a sister company that only enhances BMW brand, above and beyond what BMW has to offer to their customers with complete support of BMW corporation up to date. And I believe on 1978 Alpina was given the car manufacturing status buy German Government.

My passion and respect for Alpina brand comes from its history and the racing heritage that was created buy the performance and race mined individuals not big manufacturer or corporation.

IMO quote Oscar Wilde, who is also the philosophy of our favorite brands, the best answer.

"I have very simple taste, I always take the best"

What makes Alpina special ?? Here goes.....

- they started making typewriters

- they do not make ski boots

- they loved tuning BMWs

- they do not make watches

- they won the European touring car championship

- they are not a body kit company

- they are a certified car manufacturer who are known by few and loved by many

- I want another one.

Awesome points made by everyone above, pretty much hits all of them for me.

One key thing that makes alpina special to me is that my son's first ever car ride, at one day old, was in my Alpina B10 Biturbo. Not too many kids will be able to say that and it is a day I will never forget...
