Funny, my wife also hates station wagons.
But I love my Touring - just the right blend of sporty and function for me. Although mine is lowered on coilovers and larger wheels / tires. Also a 6 spd manual and x-drive for the winter.
The downside to the Tourings is they are really expensive when new, so resale is higher than it should be. The X1/X3 is probably the better buy for the $

Definitely a good buy for someone, even if it needs some reconditioning.
